This isn't a book about music, but rather a book about how humans bond to and thru music. Holly Tripp has edited together a wide variety of music genres that tell deeply effecting personal stories, of all types and flavors of music. You got your ethnomusical pieces, like Debra Raver's story of her discovery of her mother's Lithuanian roots through song, or the CUERDAS street drummers from Montevideo, Heidi Swedberg teaching Haitian children to sing, Bosnian blues, a photo essay of Indian - Bangladeshi musicians, songs, paintings, poems, its all happening. Then other pieces deal with our deeply personal connections to music A mix tape a sister recorded for her 20 year old brother who died, Aaron Parrett's eulogy in song to a beloved piano playing uncle on his death bed, an aging woman's emotional release while listening to a late medieval Spanish motet, poems in honor of Miles and the Duke, all deeply affecting. Some essays concern music as a social force, like when you read about the teenage sorority girls, the Kappa Pickers, who traveled to Vietnam during the war with the USO, just to uplift teenagers their own age, give them a sense of home. Perhaps you'd enjoy the story of Joe Penola, who founded the YOU ROCK foundation to aid musicians battling depression and addiction. There's a moving interview with Glen Campbell, still loving music as the Alzheimers picks apart his mind.

This listing isn't exhaustive, its only intended as an appetizer to the kalidascopic delights inside. Stories about Bluegrass bands touring on foot thru New England, bands that become famous 20 years after they break up (Surrender), lots of poems, photo essays, VR codes that link you to different songs the essays talk about, a somewhat dubious essay about how humanity discovered music their paleolithic, cave dwelling days, its just a smorgasbord of emotional outpourings. As such, this doesn't make for an easy book to read. It's far too emotionally ripping in parts, intellectually tantalizing in others, spiritually meditative as well. Like a fine wine, its sipped not gulped. Its true power isn't apparent with a brief perusal. That makes for a book to hang onto, return to, for on ongoing conversation. Most of the stories remind me of myself, or rather my connection to our shared humanity and love of all forms of music, that I would share with the contributors. The book won't provide you with a relationship to music. Only your heart and ears do that. It will, however, let you know you're not alone if you struggle thru life, with music as your balm.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a part of this book, and I hope that people who read my piece enjoy or appreciate it, but rather than my own work, I want to focus on two topics related to this volume, namely the book itself as well as its contents—starting with the physical container (if you will) of its contributors’ efforts.
Holly Tripp has concocted a hybrid that represents my first exposure to such a “design” as this part artistic venture, part coffee table book, part computer interface portal. The literary and visual aspect combines narration, poetry, and prose with pictures covering its stated goal of conveying how music touches us in varying ways. Its pages combine interviews and essays with the more traditional “creative writings.” In short, the first volume of Stories of Music covers multiple genres of music using multiple genres of delivery.
The book itself is slightly oversized yet still easily handled with high quality glossy paper making it something one can proudly leave out for display, yet it is not heavy, almost portable and certainly practical enough to carry along for reading or simply leafing through its pages that are almost a geography lesson of human experience. From India to Moscow to England, from Cuba to Uruguay to Indonesia to Bangladesh, its contributors have given Tripp plenty of ore to mine.
However, these works are, as stated stories of music, and Tripp has incorporated a sonic element as well as the visual and the written. Providing QR codes for scanning or the direct URL information, readers can access some of the book online for listening to either the entry or related material.
Nowhere is this best demonstrated than on page 66 where Nancy Gustafson’s poem “Swans” describes a special rendition of Saint-Saens’ “Le Cygne.” Embedded alongside the written material, though, are three internet entries—the poet’s reading of her own price, and interview discussing the origins of the work, and a rendition of the musical selection itself (performed by the poet’s sister). But in many ways, this entry stated on page 64, where a double-pages photograph by Vinesh Rajpaul presents “a young girl [taking] her cello lesson in the Plaza Estado del Vaticano, Buenas Aires.”
And that is just a peek. Tripp’s pages are filled with poems, stories, and views of music that are worth reading, digesting, and revisiting. Congratulations, Ms. Tripp, on a job well done, and as a side note, I am particularly proud to have been included in this company.
