The Last Orphans NW Harris Books
The Last Orphans is a post-apocalyptic story revolving around 'what happens when all adults die'. This isn't a new idea, but the driving force behind it isn't one I've read before, however the 'science' explaining it is a bit questionable, but hey, it's fiction. The story is fast paced and had me turning the pages, for this I'd give it 4 stars. But there is so much gore and violence, to the point of it being unnecessary to the plot. I also found myself skimming through bits here and there and also tiring of Shane's, the protagonist, whining to himself about being looked to as the leader of the group. These aspects bring me to rate the piece a 3 star. I'm intrigued by the story idea but don't think I'll finish the series. 3.5 stars overallTags : Amazon.com: The Last Orphans (9781940534893): N.W. The Last Orphans NW Harris Books Reviews
The Last Orphans is a sci-fi/apocalyptic targeting Young Adults. The dialogue is rather clean, but gang rape and plenty of head-on violence paints a dangerous environment of which children must navigate.
We find sixteen-year-old Shane Tucker fresh from his grandmother's wake driving back home with his belligerent, abusive, and drunk father. He almost makes a stand for himself, but is abandoned on country road on a sweltering Georgia day. His Aunt, also heading his way pulls up and gives him a lift. And this, fellow readers, is where everything turns upside down.
In short order, by different means and methods, adults are annihilated off the face of the Earth. With more questions than answers, it is up to teens to step up, find information, and coral younger children in hopes of survival.
A rag-tag group; jocks, nerds, army brats, and cheerleaders must find safety; others are all too happy to take over, by force, the void left by the adult world. Time does not favor the kids, as what killed all the adults will soon target teens, then pre-teens, all the way down to infants. All of humanity is at risk.
This is a fun read with quality editing. It is a fun launch for a series with some strong characters and continuous action. There is loss for sure so although it is a "Clean Teen" read, it has enough mayhem to reach a broader audience. The `power' killing off older folks is invisible, doesn't smell, and only attacks when the time is right.
4 Stars for YA, 3 Stars for the rest (not critical rating) as this is a quick, easy read.
Read November 2014; Copy provided by Author.
The cover says "N.W. Harris writes with clarity and realism." Ahhhh the clarity bit was lacking in certain parts; the writing was kinda choppy in places, but I'm finding that to be true of many e-books.
Early in the book, I found myself wondering it was one of those Christian rapture stories, but that theme didn't continue; it just kinda disappeared. The author uses extraneous details that confused me in certain places, and lack of punctuation in other places. For example, page 158 "Her stoic manner and tone took over, and though her brow still showed frustration and anger, the post-apocalyptic-super-survivor version of Tracy Shane was introduced to yesterday returned."
Sooo....at this point in the story I'm thinking, "who is Tracy Shane, and who was she introduced to?" and I had to read it several times to understand that Shane was not her last name. Shane is the main character. The sentence should read "....of Tracy THAT Shane was...." Little stuff like that interrupts the flow of the book, but overall, it wasn't bad.
What the heck? How is this disturbing book 4 stars? It is unnecessarily gruesome for some silly storyline that doesn't make sense or is in any captivating. It starts with detailed accounts of how adults are sickenly mauled and killed by animals like dogs and cows. If the author wanted to do a sci-fi/utopian story they could have down it without this messed up violence that is literaly sickening. There was no need to include a scene where 7 year old girls get gang raped. That did not have to happen for the story plot to advance and makes me believe that the author is some messed up psycho.
well I'll tell you what. This is one of the most graphic books ive ever read. Anything from rabid dogs to peoples face getting eaten off by cockroaches! it was in fact a very good book, but the violence made me cringe and really took some away from the book.
Pros
nice read
good(but unrealistic) story line
Cons
very graphic
