Magic Bites Ilona Andrews Books

3.5 Stars!

I had read the Hidden Legacy Series by Ilona Andrews and fell in love with the writing, so I figured I would pick up the Kate Daniels Series. Magic Bites is book one, and you can tell this is the first book from this author, as it wasn't as polished as the new books.

In Magic Bites we meet mercenary Kate Daniels who finds out a loved one has died. She pushes herself into the investigation and has to make nice with people and creatures she never wants to deal with. Being pulled into politics and evil she never wanted to get involved in puts her into dangerous territory and as the story progresses we learn that Kate is hiding something, but we never truly find out what exactly Kate is.

I really did enjoy how headstrong and snarky Kate is, but sometimes this was her downfall. She wouldn't willingly accept help and that got her into trouble a lot. She's not very trusting, and that's understandable with the world she's living in, but when she's dealing with the world she's living in, she has to trust someone and accept help when it's offered. Unfortunately she learns that lesson a bit too late in this book. Kate goes through a lot in this book, and at times it became overwhelming for her and for me as the reader, I had a hard time keeping up with what was going on and who was who and what exactly was going on.

I did enjoy Kate's relationship with The Pack and I have a feeling this is going to be an interesting relationship going forward. Curran and her have a bond that isn't going to go away, they push each other too much for it to be ignored, and they kind of did save each other a few too many times. The Pack's dynamic is interesting and that part of the book was some of my favorite parts to read. I really enjoyed those characters and hopefully I'll get to see more of them in future reads in this series.

There was a lot of build up and craziness to get to the who, what, when, where, and why of what was going on in this book, and the climax of the book was awesome, but then it was just over. Thankfully we had a pretty awesome epilogue that gave us a glimpse into Kate afterwards and maybe what's in store for her next. I was just sad that it had all of this build up and then BAM it was over! I did love the characters in this book, but at times the writing was choppy and the story line was a bit hard to follow, hence the 3 1/2 stars. I am intrigued by this story line though and will be picking up more in this series to see what lies ahead for Kate and the rest of the beings we met in Magic Bites.

Magic Bites Ilona Andrews Books Reviews

This book is a delight to read and very well written. Its the kind of book that is so well written you brain can go on autopilot and really engage in what is happening. I don't find myself jarred back to reality by poor writing or a weird character move. Illona Andrews knows her characters and they act true to themselves. Only six pages I could already tell I liked the main character, Kate Daniels. Immediately I could tell Kate is a badass rebel with a fun and sarcastic sense of humor. The writer does an excellent job of revealing part of who Kate is early on so we can connect with her and want to follow her story. The author doesn't do by listing facts or having other characters go on a weird and transparent tangent about her. They put Kate into situations early on that reveal what she is like and who she is and are also really engaging to read. At the same time, Kate isn't perfect and can be endearingly annoying. If she was perfect I would roll my eyes and put the book down, but she's not and I found myself wanting to power through the other books in the series.
The romance in the series is a slow burn. Depending on your preference that could be annoying or very satisfying. I really enjoyed where she took the relationship (which one??? READ MORE BOOKS TO FIND OUT! ) in the later books. The slow burn ends up being more realistic than many book relationships and the tension between the two while they figure it out is SEXY and HOT. This book is pretty clean of smut but one of the next books things... heat up... ) ) ;) so if that's not your thing, beware.
Illona Andrews is a really good world builder and this book is no exception. I found the world building in the Hidden Legacy books a little more understandable and easy to follow than the Kate Daniels series. Although it is a little harder to follow in Kate Daniels, it is no less interesting. The idea of magic and tech is really cool I just wish I understood it a little better. This is helped by the following books which explain things a little more in depth.
All in all it was a really good first book with clever writing, lovable main characters, and a really interesting plot. The following books get better because the things that make this book good are allowed to grow and develop. I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy authors like Sarah J. Maas, Sarah Maclean, Kresley Cole, etc. I hope you enjoy it!
I'm still on the fence about this series, though I am going to read the second one before I make a full judgement. This book has very complex world building, but the author does very little explaining so you're basically dropped in the middle and have to figure it all out for yourself. Andrews obviously has created a clear view of this world in her head, and she just seems to take it for granted that the reader is on the same wavelength. But to be honest, I didn't even get a clear sense of what was going on and the "rules" of the world until almost 3/4 of the way through the book. Having finished, there are still some things I am unclear on. This world also tends to have a bit of a "everything but the kitchen sink" approach, with Andrews throwing in creatures from knights to zombies to vampires, to her main character Kate, who claims to be a "simple human" but must be the most superhuman human ever, since she can literally outfight every monster she encounters.

I was able to make it through the book however, mostly based off the strength of the main characters. They were interesting enough to keep me reading, even though I didn't always understand what was going on.
